Hi I am looking for information about myself and sibling. We were placed in a childrens home in Tredegar approx 1956/57 I would have started school there and gone to an infants school in the area. I left Tedegar a week before my 7th Birthday. I have no memory of my time there. My name then was Heather Heron I was 5 years old in 1957. My sister was Gwyneth Heron she would of been about 10 years old and my brother would have been 7/8 years old his name was Trevor Heron. Any information that anyone can give about the schools or the childrens home would be great. The name of the childrens home would be great as my search from childrens services have no records of us. I really hope there is someone out there that can help Thank you Heather |

Francis married his schooldays sweetheart Jean Jackson we being in the same form together in the Grammar School 1952-1959 and I believe Jean's father was manager of the NCB Brickworks at the time. I last spoke to her at the school reunion in 2002 which was a very sad occasion for me since it was only a couple of years after Francis had died aged 59.

Further to Daleks note Francis later became Commanding Officer of RAF Coningsby with rank of Group Captain (very senior indeed); they flew Jaguars of which Francis had earlier been a pilot
He was know as Frank in the RAF (Francis might have seemed a shade fem).
I didnt know that he died some 12 years ago- He could not have been much more than 60. I think he married a Tredegar girl who survived him, but I didnt know her

During the 1950's my late friend Francis Hoare's parents were managers of the Cottage Homes in Park Row and he also had a younger sister named Elizabeth. Francis went to Cranwell College and subsequently became leader of the famous Red Arrows for several years. Alas he passed away prematurely about twelve years ago. |

I have contacted the Blaenau Gwent offices and they have emailed me to let me know they have passed info on so its just a waiting game now to wait back and hear unless of course some one reconised our name dont think anyone will my name but my sister was older and so thats posible she made friends with the kids at school. Yep, it's deffo The Cottage Homes you are describing as it overlooked our town park. It was surely council owned at that time so probably Blaenau Gwent offices is a good place to start. |

Thanks for your replies Im new to this website and not really sure what im doing in answering but thanks all. The nutshell is this attached to or next door to a park. My sister said a park was next door. do you have any idea how I go about finding out information from these homes I now live in Australia |

There was a childrens home at the bottom of Charles St., it was called 'The Nutshell' & still holds the same name now, though it has been a family home for some 40 years or so.
I wish you luck in your search as some of my uncles & aunts were brought up there too, back as far as 1932. |

Hi Heather, there was another children's home called 'The Nutshell', it was located at the bottom of Charles street (the house is still there) and there would have been a choice of schools for you to attend, either Glanhowy or Nantybwch/Ashvale. But as doddyman and mike says the main one was The Cottage Homes in Park Row. Good Luck.

The childrens home would most likely be the "Cottage Homes" in Park Row.
The Cottage Homes closed as a children's home some time in the late 1970s; after that the buildings were used a a homeless shelter. They were still there until quite recently, when they were demolished and completely rebuilt.

I cannot remember any children's homes in Tredegar in the 50s ( maybe other fourum members can help ) so its possible you were placed in Tredegar Cottage Homes most children from there went to Earl Street Infants School. |
