I am already sick and fed up with the Olympic hype
With today’s news that he names Olympic London 2012 are protected words
Trading standards seizing mugs with the words if coffee drinking were an Olympic sport I would be a world champion
And the Olympic flame on at every opportunity on television even saw it incorporated into an episode of eastenders
I am looking forward to the games but the hype I can well do without
how about you or am I alone?

Sorry DJH, I must apologise in advance for not reading the Guardian article. Just to read Polly Toynbee, Geo Monbiot etc is calculated to make one miserable.
I lived through WWII, the food and fuel rationing (until 1953) and then the EOKA lads in Cyprus who, I was convinced, had an interest in me.
I know that most people (me particularly) can look back and think how lucky (and therefore happy) we are now.
If I can make just one person feel slightly happier then I feel that it has been a good day.

BE HAPPY!
Taking the point about state and public schools I have some good news-
Since 70% of winners went to state schools and we have 24 golds.
That means that 16 winners (from the statistics) are from state schools.
Thus we are still 3rd in medals just from our state scholars.
I think thats fantastic.
I want all contributors to cheer with me-

heard on sky news, 1/3rd of gb's medals have been won by former public school pupils. How many commoners have access to fencing, rowing and archery?. There's bound to be the odd one, that progresses from the comprehensive school. But there's certain events that are reserved for the rich and influential. |

Intelligent guy is old Morissey. There is no truer saying than 'Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel'. I must say though I've enjoyed the olympics especially the Cycling but couldn't care less about the public schooldboy sports which GB excels at, sailing, equestrian, rowing, etc |

I wasnt that enthusiastic about the games but I must say GB is doing fantastically well and it really enthuses me.
Some of it is a bit strange, sailing and wind-surfing but so much else is great- The cyclists and oarsmen (both sexes) are amazing as are our field competitors.
I was entranced by the Dressage this pm; couldnt believe that a pretty dumb animal (the horse that is) could recall and be controlled to do such steps.
I did a quick check since I couldnt recall GB doing as well in China; in fact we were 4th. Interestingly Russia beat us but are well down this year. Germany competed well against us but again are well down now. Is there something about GB (as a country) that we havent been seeing?
I really believe that the games are "lifting" people. They seem happier and have that "Can Do" spirit.
Hope I'm right. We need a bit of that. |

Another definition which I like for a curmudgeon is "a crusty irascible cantankerous old person full of stubborn ideas " which seems to fit many people I know of.

Each to thier own I say. If you enjoy the games then that's fine but I turn on the news(I know it can be depressing but I still would like to know what's going on in the world) and we get the games first.Then after a sometimes short news item we get a repeat of the item on the games. I change to a different channel and there they are again!GAMES! I know that the athletes spend a life time working hard towards thier goal of a medal but the games are very much overexposed.I wish the athletes good luck but would still like to have a choice on the tv that I pay a lot of licence money for. |

You have these sort of people in all walks of life,there is always someone looking for the worst in people,thakfully they are in the minority. I think these small minority cloud our minds to the fact that the vast majority of athletes are decent people trying hard to bring honour to their respective sports and their Countries. We are quick to find fault,but slow to praise. |

ok forkinhell, sunday morning during the bbc's paper review the presenter referred to the kazakhstani rider as a 'drugs cheat' more than twice. Secondly, i did'nt know what a curmudgeon was and to be honest i dont care. As for people learning more to grow their vocabulary, well thats a whole different topic. |

Thank you for your kind words Butch. Yes the ceremony was spectacular and all the volunteers were amazing, what memories they will have. One of the highlights for me was seeing the Queen in the Bond sketch, she showed she has a sense of humour that we never see.
The lighting of the Olympic flame by the young athletes was so moving. Good luck to all the Team BG athletes.

I couldnt agree with you more Trish. The wife & i really enjoyed the opening ceremony,we thought it was spectacular. If everyone sat in their comfy armchairs and did nothing but criticise the world would be worse for it. Its a pity the worlds conflicts could not be sorted out on the sports pitch, now that would be something. The young people taking part in any sport are to be congatulated not criticised at least they are dedicated to their sport and not out on the streets creating havoc, as was mentioned in a recent topic on this forum about a certain individual called Microwave head and Co.

Well i didn't know the meaning of that word either so i must be less educated... ..What i have found out that i've heard different people saying how they hate the Olympics ,yet they can tell you all about it ......i think they forget what they say ......... |

Jesus wept! The BBC isn't calling anyone a drug cheat.
Cycling is quite a niche sport, Saturday's road race could well have been the first race many viewers had seen and they probably wouldn't have been familiar with many of the riders apart from Cavendish and Wiggins even though Alexandre Vinokourov is one of the biggest names in pro cycling. With this in mind the BBC have provided some background on the gold medalists career and that includes a ban for doping. Or, again, would you rather that the BBC didn't report facts? |

Because she knows the meaning of the word, and is able to 'use' it in a statement implies intelligence. Therefore the average person takes and accepts it, after all, she know's the words that you dont. Thus making you less educated and look upto those who do. |

Like it or loathe it, the Olympics are with us for another two weeks or so.
I'll enjoy most of the coverage that I have the time to see but realise that not everyone will. I am not politically minded but, on this occasion, agree with Tessa Jowell, the Olympics Minister who is reported as saying
"just because most of the country is going to be happy about the Olympics, that doen't mean everyone will be. Curmudgeons are free to be curmudgeonly."
When I say that I agree, what I mean is that I would do if I knew what a curmudgeon is!!! |
