A SPECIAL bunch of flowers sits on the kitchen drainer at Margaret Colbourne's home - a precious souvenir of an incredible couple of days for her Paralympic cycling champion son.

Tredegar's Mark Colbourne, 42, carved his own piece of sporting immortality on Friday by winning the gold medal in the C1 3km individual pursuit event at a packed Velodrome at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, 24 hours after pedalling to a silver medal in the C1 1km time trial.
"He gave me the bouquet they give to medal winners. I didn't think they were real flowers, but it is beautiful," said a proud Mrs Colbourne.
"I think I'm going to keep part of it as a souvenir of Mark's achievement and lay the rest at his father's grave.
"I only wish Cecil had been there to see Mark because he was always encouraging him and he would have loved it."
Mrs Colbourne and Mark's daughter Jessica, 18, were at the packed 6,000-capacity Velodrome "screaming their heads off" last Thursday and Friday at the culmination of an incredible three-year journey from the wreckage of a paragliding accident on the Gower peninsula.
"Thursday was great but Friday was fantastic, a wonderful day, and what a performance," said Mrs Colbourne, of Sirhowy, Tredegar.
"Three years ago what Mark and we went through, I can't explain. It was like hell."
In May 2009, Mr Colbourne, who has worked previously for the Tredegar-based Hospice of the Valleys, was seriously injured at Rhossili, a broken back and lower limb paralysis resulting from the accident.
"He said a freak wind turned him over and down he went, but he landed on the beach feet first," said Mrs Colbourne.
"It has been a long hard road since then, and early on he was told he probably wouldn't walk again, but he just told the surgeon "watch this space."
"There wasn't anything negative about it with him, he turned negatives into positives every step of the way.
"He's always been active. He played volleyball for Wales in the 1990s and then there was the paragliding. Being fit definitely helped him in his recovery.
"He tried rowing but didn't really get on with it, but then Neil Smith from Disability Sport Wales got him into the Velodrome in Newport. That was only about 18 months ago and it's amazing to think that he was on stabilisers at first.
"He's come so far and we're all very proud of his achievements. Cecil died (of cancer) in February and I know Mark was cycling for him.
"Mark is already talking about the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016. But I think I'd have to sell my house to go to that!"

Posted - 14/09/2012 : 13:14:17 Argus backs calls for Tredegar Paralympian Mark Colbourne to be honoured SouthWalesArgus
TODAY, your Argus is backing local people's calls for Gwent's golden boy Mark Colbourne to be given a gong.
The Tredegar cycling star bagged a hat trick of medals including Gwent's only Olympic or Paralympic gold in the 3km individual pursuit, breaking a world record in the process at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
The triumph came just 24 hours after he won silver in the C1-2-3 1km time trial in the Velodrome.
He went on to win his second silver medal in the men’s C1 16km time trial..
The 42-year-old paracyclist who was left with lower leg paralysis after a paragliding accident three years ago enjoyed a dream debut Paralympics.
He already has a gold postbox in his honour next to Tredegar Post Office on Commercial Street, but the people of Blaenau Gwent are hoping he will receive an even greater honour as Britain’s Olympians and Paralympians are set to get their own honours list. And we are backing those calls today.
Cabinet office sources say David Cameron has decided to place awards arising from the London 2012 Games outside the usual system.
Blaenau Gwent Mayor Councillor Graham Bartlett said: "I would love to see Mark Colbourne receive the highest of honours. He is a fantastic role model and inspirational figure.
"Everyone here in Blaenau Gwent is extremely proud of him."
Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council Hedley McCarthy added: "Everyone is so proud of Mark and would support him to get an honour. He deserves even more recognition."
Deputy Leader for Tredegar Town Council Alyson Tippings said: "It would really be appropriate to have a separate honours list for our sporting heroes.
"I hope Olympians and Paralympians will be treated equally, and I hope that Mark, having won three medals, will be awarded with the highest possible honour. His performances at the Games were absolutely breathtaking." Related links
Resident Nicola Bennett, 24, from Dukestown in Tredegar said: "I definitely think Mark should be getting an honour.
"Knowing what he has gone through and seeing that he just gets on with things without it affecting his confidence or self-esteem is truly inspirational."
Mark's mother Margaret said he would enjoy receiving an honour.
"I think that would be really lovely for him," she said. "He met the Prime Minister on Friday for 10 or 15 minutes and there's going to be an open top bus for him around Tredegar. I've been like a celebrity myself this week."
MP for Blaenau Gwent, Nick Smith said it would be great if "one of our own" was considered for an honour.
"It's very important that there is a separate list for Olympians and Paralympians as it would be a shame if they were crowded out," he said.
"People like Mark ought to be considered. He's a fantastic role model for the people interested in sport in South East Wales, and a big thumbs up for everything he's done over the last 10 days. It would be great if one of our own was considered."
Meanwhile Blaenau Gwent AM, Alun Davies said: "Mark's extraordinary achievements have focused the sporting world's attention on our community."
A cabinet office spokesperson said: "The Honours system recognises those who make exceptional contributions to this country, and all awards are made on merit. Honours are usually awarded in the New Year and Queen's Birthday lists."
Mark Colbourne and other Welsh Olympic and Paralympic heroes will be welcomed home on Friday with a special event in Cardiff.
The homecoming ceremony, organised by the Welsh Government, will be for Welsh members of both Paralympics GB and Team GB.
First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "I call on everyone who can, to try and make it to the homecoming event for both our Paralympic and Olympic heroes. It is an opportunity to show them just how proud we are."
The First Minister was speaking ahead of last night's closing ceremony of the Paralympics and praised the Welsh competitors.
"What they have achieved is an inspiration to all of us," he said.

Posted - 05/09/2012 : 14:35:49 Another Silver for Mark
Welsh cycling star Mark Colbourne wins silver in men’s C1 time-trialLink: WalesOnLine
Welsh cycling star Mark Colbourne had to settle for silver today in the men’s C1 time-trial.
Colbourne, who won individual pursuit gold in the velodrome, clocked 25mins 29secs on the 16km course, but Michael Teuber of Germany pipped him to victory, finishing first in 25:16.
It was the 42-year-old Tredegar cyclist's third medal of his first Games after breaking his back in a paragliding accident three years ago.
“I gave it everything, I’m happy with my silver,” Colbourne said.
“I’m very proud of what I’ve done today.”
Sport Wales Chair, Professor Laura McAllister paid tribute to Colbourne, saying: “We are rapidly running out of superlatives for Mark. What an incredible achievement to claim this silver medal to add to his previous gold and silver. We couldn’t be happier for him.
“He has powered Wales up to 10 medals at these Games now. Considering the exceptional standard of competition at these Games, we are very pleased with progress so far and we’re hoping for a lot more success yet to come.”
Jon Morgan, Executive Director of Disability Sport Wales, said: “Mark is a consummate professional and we are thoroughly delighted for him. He still has the road race to contend tomorrow too, so there might still be more celebrations for Mark and Wales.
“I must acknowledge the role that Mark’s original Disability Sport Wales Academy coach, Neil Smith, played in identifying and unlocking his potential. We owe coaches like Neil a huge debt of gratitude for the work they put in behind the scenes.”

Posted - 02/09/2012 : 15:01:19 Magnificent Mark! But the gold postbox? That's OK for lesser towns such as Bridgend or Birmingham. But for Tredegar, it must be the Town Clock - one panel of the column in gold and one in silver. Pity he didn't get a bronze. |
