New research inspires project to improve areas of Blaenau Gwent

http://www.gwent.police.uk/news.php?a=3110

Residents in Cefn Golau are being invited to attend meetings with partner agencies to discuss a new initiative supported by ground-breaking crime research.

The meetings will launch ‘Neighbourhoods Together’ – an initiative which aims to help residents reach public services more easily. ‘Neighbourhoods Together’ will work with communities throughout Blaenau Gwent to identify local solutions to local problems.

Through the Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science (JDI), Cefn Golau was identified as one of eight areas in Blaenau Gwent which could benefit from targeted work that would improve people’s quality of life and encourage the best use of local services. In addition to Cefn Golau, five other housing estates and two town centres have been identified.

The JDI is the first Institute in the world devoted to Crime Science. Research is concentrated on new ways to cut crime and increase security, drawing upon vast experience in related disciplines, including architecture, economics, engineering, geography, medicine, psychology, statistics and town planning.

Safer Blaenau Gwent Partners working on ‘Neighbourhoods Together’ include: Gwent Police, Tai Calon, Environmental Services, Trading Standards, Children and Young Peoples Partnership, Social Services, South Wales Fire Service, Aneurin Bevan Health Service and the Probation Service. In addition other organisations including, Communities First, The Bobby Van Scheme, Victim Support, GAVO, BGDAS, Western Power Distribution and additional third sector organisations, have all offered their support to the initiative.

Superintendent for the Blaenau Gwent Local Policing Unit and joint chair of the Community Safety Partnership, Mark Warrender says: “This is the first time a partnership initiative, on this scale, has been attempted and all of the organisations have been extremely enthusiastic in working together, with the residents of Blaenau Gwent, to discover what the main issues are for these areas. We are all looking forward to working with communities, in deciding upon what should be done in their areas and in particular, we will be focussing upon residents who may feel more vulnerable.”

Blaenau councillor John Hopkins, who also chairs the Community Safety Partnership, says: “This is a ground-breaking new approach. It will see a range of partners working together with communities to identify the issues that matter most to them – at a very local level – to provide relevant interventions.”

Phil Hackling, Head of Housing Services for Tai Calon, says: “We are working together with the residents on our estates to identify the issues that affect their lives. By working with our communities we can improve the homes and lives of our tenants. ‘Neighbourhoods Together’ will empower the communities to make the area cleaner, safer and greener for a sustainable future.”

Any residents who would like to be involved in this pioneering project should attend the ‘Neighbourhoods Together’ meetings in Cefn Golau, Newtown, Ystrad Deri, Hill Top, Tredegar Town Centre, Abertillery Town Centre, Briey Hill, Bryn Farm, which will be advertised locally, throughout the summer months.
