I don't think it looks one bit like there's a lot of spare cash floating about.
There are 4 replies, with the last one on 19/05/2013 at 17:45:50 by theclock
Quote:
For their final game in their section of the Welsh Cup the Bedwellty Park bowlers travelled to Ynysddu. Having gone down to Machen the previous week, chances of qualifying for the knock out stages had disappeared, but it was important to build on the early season impetus.
The rink skipped by Ken Holly, with support provided by Darren Bruton, Kevin Wilkes and Stephen Jenkins had soon opened up an early advantage, and at the half way stage they held a six shot lead, but the home rink had levelled by the eighteenth end. The final ends were important for both rinks as they strove to obtain the shots advantage. In the end it was the Tredegar rink that showed up best as they took four shots to keep the Ynysddu four at bay and claim a hard earned, but deserved 18-14 victory.
The Terry Hoskins rink for the “park” held the advantage for nearly all the afternoon, with lead Granville Jones, Brent Cavender and Terry Cavender providing the backup, they built on an early advantage and had soon opened up a ten shot difference. A confidence boosting six on the first end set them on their way and they built on this early lead to claim an excellent victory by 27-15.
From eleven shots down at the halfway stage the Paul Jenkins quartet of Windsor Owens, Gwyn Rogers and Neil Packer knew they needed to respond to the bowling of the Ynysddu four. With ends running out they were eight shots adrift with three to play. But a collective effort by the visiting rink saw them narrow the gap, picking up seven shots on these final ends to finish agonisingly just one shot adrift on the hosts 23-24.
It looked to be an ominous sight for the bowlers of Bedwellty Park as they looked across the rinks at the scoreboards, with half of the ends bowled the Tredegar four of Phil Thomas, Gerald Cooper Malcolm Higgs and skip Granville Hooper had only picked up two shots and were trailing by twenty shots . All the hard work by the other rinks would have counted for nothing if they could not respond and raise their game. They knew it was vital to cut back on the deficit and they responded to the challenge, six on the twelfth end gave them a confidence boost, as they started their comeback. But the home rink were also playing with confidence and had soon re established their lead. From this stage the Tredegar bowlers dominated, taking the final six ends, not enough shots to claim a win, as the home rink took the game 26-20, but enough to reduce the gap for the sake of the overall score, which went Bedwellty Park way with a 88-79 victory.
Out of the Welsh Cup, the Bedwellty Park bowlers turned their attention to the Monmouthshire Cup as they entertained Caerleon and were keen to make progress to the next round. The Ken Holly rink gave them an excellent start, with Granville Jones , Neil Packer and Kevin Wilkes providing excellent support, they had fourteen shots on the board before the visitors responded. They continued to dominate the rink as the Caerleon four picked up only three winning ends, this gave the home side an excellent start with a 28-5 win. The Paul Jenkins four held an early advantage , with a five shot lead, but the visiting rink had the better finish as they took a win by 19-13. The closest game of the evening came on the Granville Hooper rink, of Windsor Owens, Gerald Cooper and Malcolm Higgs. With little to separate the rinks all evening, the score was constantly changing hands. The final wood of the evening decided the outcome, with the visitors holding two on the rink and a one shot advantage on the scoreboard, the home skip drew shot to level up the game 18-18.
An excellent performance by the final rink, secured a well deserved victory for the home bowlers. Lyndon Jones, Gwyn Rogers and Terry Cavender were in good form as they restricted the Caerleon rink to just six shots as they took the rink with a win by 27-6. An excellent performance saw the Tredegar bowlers progress to the next round with a victory by 86 shots to 48.
The GBL side made it a successful weekend for the Bedwellty Park Club as they took a maximum twelve points in their victory over visitors Caldicot by 75-32. Lyn Walters, Jim Oliver, Lyndon Jones and skip Howell Jones were on top form as they gained a 32-9 victory to put the Tredegar side on the road to claiming the points. They took all but five of the ends to claim the first two points of the afternoon.
With the back men of Keith Jones and D. Bruton benefitting from early woods in the head from lead Lewis Hill, the “park” rink had soon opened up an early advantage. However as the visitors claimed the middle ends of the game the score became a little closer with just one shot separating them. The rink who possessed the best finish would take the spoils and this proved to be the home four. They took the final four ends to freeze out the Caldicot four and claim a win by 22-15.
Andrew Pearce was in excellent form for the final rink, he did all his skip asked of him and with excellent support from his fellow front man Iuean West, the rink were able to build on the early advantage each end. The back men took full advantage and were soon claiming ends on a regular basis. The rink win gave the home side a victory by22-8 and a maximum points victory overall.

He congratulated me on London (2012 Paralympics) and asked me what I was training for and how I kept my hands so nice.”

Cockroft, 20, from Halifax, Yorkshire, who won gold medals in both her 100m and 200m events at London 2012, said her next goal was the International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France, in July.

“I’ve got a double world champion title to defend and there are always records to be broken,” she said.

“You’re only as good as your last race and I intend to keep winning.”

Oliver Hynd, who won a silver medal for swimming at the London Paralympics, said it was “incredible” to be made an MBE.

The 18-year-old, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, said: “I never thought this would happen, it’s just fantastic.”

But the teenager admitted he found the experience nerve-wracking.

“Diving into the pool in front of thousands of people is normal for me, but this is completely different.”

Hynd competed against his brother Sam at the Paralympics, with his elder sibling winning bronze in the event, but Hynd said he had not received an honour like his.
