I am searching for information on my father, and my possible half siblings with the surname of Brain.
Yesterday, after doing some research in Tintern, I am led to believe that my father had been wounded in WW2, and was then sent to guard Prisoners of War at Piercefield House, at Chepstow Race Course in approx. 1942/1943.
He met my mother Elizabeth Maud in 1943, and I am the result of that liason.
I believe he held the rank of Sergeant, but I have no idea of who he was serving with at the time, or his christian name.
If you are a descendant of the Brain family, could you please contact me with any piece of information you may have.
Much appreciated. |

Piecefield House and grounds is now Chepstow Racecourse.
In WW11 the grounds was an airfield and many regiments of troops were stationed all around the area.
There were many prisoner-of-war camps also in the area, Bulwark, Leechpool etc.
I have also found that The Mount, Welsh Street, Chepstow, also became a P.O.W. camp in WW11
The Mount became a special school after the war, but now there is a housing development there.
The Moint is very near Piecefield Park so probably your relative was stationed there as a guard.
When I was teaching at Lydney we had a family of Brains from Bream, in the Forest of Dean.
Sorry can't be of further help.
Bryan

Thank you for taking the time to reply. However, I am pretty certain that he was a guard at Chepstow Race Course.
I believe my father was originally from the Tredegar area, and could well have returned there after the war, and possibly went down the mines.
I am particularly interested hearing from the "Brains" descendents, who could possibly be related to me.
Thank you again. Royston |

Another thought has struck me.
Have you your birth certificate? If not you can get a copy from the County Records Office, now Ebbw Vale.
The certificate should give you some idea of who was who etc.
Why not visit the County Records Office. They are more than helpful and will give you guidence of which is the best path to follow.

Unfortunately my fathers name is not on my birth certificate.
I tried Record offices in Newport and Cwmbran. Didn't think of Ebbw Vale. Will give them a try.
Thanks again. |

Hiya Butch, Thanks for that, I have managed to obtain 11 names and addresses of "The Brain Families" In Tredegar, I have spoken already to a Royston and a Derek Brain on the phone, but seems, so far no good, i Believe there are around 42 brain family's in the area. But what with the Army and also been injured and a POW guard, hopefully will narrow it down. Digby.. |
