Hey Everyone- Happy Bank Holiday!!!

I have yet another question concerning my grandfather....

I have located his grandparents on both sides when he was growing up to Church Terrace New Tre (maternal), and the High Street Fleur-De-Lis (paternal). He was born in 1925 and I know that he spent most of his life on Waunborfa Road. Looking at the Electoral Registers, his family don't move there until 1932- which means I have 7 years missing!

I asked my mum last night and she mentioned Groes Faen- apparently he used to talk about it alot and this was where the family bible was burnt (with a name like Davies I wish they hadn't!)

I tried to google, but all I get is Groes Faen, Pontyclyn. Mum remembers going there when little and says it was just one street of houses..... I did think this would be around New Tre?

Anyway, I checked the Electoral Regs for this address yesterday and can't find it anywhere, and think maybe I should look in the Glam Ro instead?

I just wondered if the name rang any bells with anybody or if this place may still exist?

Sorry to keep posting various places on here, and not specifically Tredegar, but my mapping of the area still isn't that great and I could be in the right place!

Thank you so much as always for any snippets of info.

Kindest Regards
Claire

There was a Groesfaen colliery near Bargoed which closed in 1968.
There still exists a small row of houses which overlooked the site of the colliery.
I believe the area is still known as Groesfaen.

I've looked up Groes Faen and found that it is situated just outside Cardiff on the route to Merthyr Tydfil.

2.4 miles from Pontyclun.
3.9 miles from Radyr.
3.9 miles from Taffs Well.

Your best bet would be to pay a visit to the area!!

I agree with KenJ. It is just one street of houses, only a mile or two from Bargoed. I had a schoolfriend who lived there. Have a look at www.welshcoalmines.co.uk for pics of the mine.

Hi Annette
I also have a friend who was actually born there.
She always maintains she is from GROESFAEN.
Her dad was a pit manager when the colliery was operational.
The row of houses where she lived is still there - it now borders on the outskirts of Bargoed Golf Club.
It's called Groesfaen Terrace.
I would be interested to know your friend's name.
Maybe we can connect old friends.

Dear Annette, Bryan and Ken,

Thank you all so much for the information! The houses, as you describe, by Bargoed sound on a par with mum's memories- thank you!
I'll still keep the other one in mind just in case, but the location doesn't really tie in to well. I do agree I should go and visit again!

Just to reiterate my thanks once again as as I never would have found it! I do hope that you are both able to link up as well- an extra bonus!

Kindest Regards

Dear A and K,

Managed to take the afternoon off work and go and explore!
Thank you so much- Groes Faen is indeed the right place- funny to see Groes Faen signs either side of what is 20 houses but at least this made the location obvious! A lady was very helpful in the Bargoed library, situated on the main street running right through, and printed me off a map for 10p!
Anyway, if anyone else is interested in this area do let me know as I took a couple of snaps and would be more than happy to share- also now have a few pics of Fleur De Lis and Parish Church at Gelligaer if of any interest!

Thanks again guys!
