OAP Rescued From House Fire Source - South Wales Argus
An elderly woman from Tredegar was taken to hospital after a fire broke out in her bedroom.
The woman, named by neighbours as Audrey Griffiths, was at her semi-detached home in Attlee Way, Cefn Golau, with her daughter, June, and grandchildren Jade, 9, and Adam, 5, when the blaze begun in the early hours of Sunday. A neighbour said he was awoken at around 3am when his wife ran downstairs saying there was a fire. He said the two children were sitting on the grass bank at the front of the house, crying and screaming, and Mrs Griffiths and her daughter were standing in the doorway looking shaken. He brought them into his house and waited for the emergency services to arrive, who then evacuated both families and cordoned off the area. He said he was worried the fire might spread to his adjoining house. “I could only describe it as like a jet engine fire,” he said. The neighbour thought Mrs Griffiths was bed-bound and had two oxygen tanks in her room, which looked to have exploded, but he did not know how the fire had started. Other residents said they had heard it was caused by a cigarette. Staff at the Post Office and General Store on Attlee Way have put a donations bucket on the counter to raise money for Mrs Griffiths and her family. Fire crews from Tredegar and Rhymney used four breathing apparatus sets and two hose reel jets. A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the cause was accidental.
