Census details of the 36 million people living in England and Wales in 1911 go online for the first time on Tuesday, three years earlier than planned after a freedom of information ruling. The task of scanning 8.5 million dusty and brittle documents at Britain's National Archives in Kew, west London, has taken two years and is still not complete.
A search for the Liberal prime minister of the period, Herbert Asquith, reveals there were 25 people at his 10 Downing Street residence in London on the day of the survey, Sunday April 2, 1911.
As well as Asquith, his second wife Margot and four of his children, there were 19 servants on the premises, including three footmen, a butler, a governess and three kitchen maids.
The scanning has been undertaken by family history website findmypast.com, who won a contract with the National Archives in 2006 to put the records onto the Internet.
The 1911 census is the first in which the original forms filled in by households have survived.
Details from the forms have been entered into a searchable database and colour photos of the original documents can also be downloaded from the census website, www.1911census.co.uk.
Original plans for the service to go online in 2012 were hurriedly brought forward after Britain's Information Commissioner upheld an appeal for the records to be released sooner than the normal 100-year embargo.
Findmypast Commercial Director Elaine Collins said certain sensitive details, such as information about disabilities or the children of women prisoners, would be withheld till 2012.
She said lessons had been learned since the online launch of the 1901 census in January 2002, when huge demand from people researching their family history crashed website computers minutes after it went online.
"We aim to deliver a quality service that has high but not infinite capacity," she said.

Sorry Morgan & Brad but there are no welsh counties available yet. I had a trial of the beta version that was available all over Christmas and been on there today as well still "coming soon " after all the Welsh ones. Will keep watching and post when they are available.
Val

Forgot to say how expensive it is to view, searching is free but to view the transcription costs 10 credits and the original is 30 credits and the credits cost I think it was 10p to 12p each depending on which package you buy. |

About the 1911 census The 1911 census
The 1911 census for England and Wales was taken on the night of Sunday 2 April, 1911. The count included all individual households, plus institutions such as prisons, workhouses, naval vessels and merchant vessels, and it also attempted to make an approximate count of the homeless.
What is in the 1911 census?
In common with the censuses that preceded it, it recorded the following information: Where an individual lived Their age at the time of the census Who (what relatives) they were living with Their place of birth Occupation
Also, depending on an individual’s circumstances, additional information could include: Who their guests were on the night of the census The number of servants they had (if any) Whether they were an employee or employer Details of nationality Duration of current marriage
Fertility in marriage and occupational data
In response to government concerns the 1911 census also asked additional, more specific questions to each household, about fertility in marriage and occupational data.
The 1911 census documents
Prior to 1911, the household schedules were destroyed once the details had been transferred into the enumerators’ summary books. But for the 1911 census both sets of records have been preserved, which means you can see the census documents filled out in your ancestor’s own hand (complete with mistakes and additional comments), in addition to the edited version in the enumerators’ summary.
At launch the household schedules (original household pages), plus their transcriptions are available. The enumerators’ summary books will go online six to eight weeks after launch.
The 1911 census and the suffragettes
Frustrated with the government’s refusal to grant women the vote, a large number of women boycotted the 1911 census by refusing to be counted.
There were two forms of protest. In the first, the women (or their husband) refused to fill in the form, often recording their protest to the enumerator. In the second, women evaded the census by staying away from their home for the whole night.
In both cases, any details relating to individual women in the households will be missing from the census.
For the family historian the active refusal to fill in the form (accompanied by a protest statement) at least registers the presence of a woman/women in the household, whereas the women who evaded the count are simply untraceable via the census.
The exact number of women who boycotted the census is not known, though some people have estimated that it may be as many as several thousand. Val

Hi Mkerchey05,
I was told that they scaned the original census in the order they were released to them ie all southern counties first, then worked up through the counties of england. On the beta version I tried lots of people were saying a lot of northern counties were missing. I was surprised to see it released this soon as thought they would have added a lot more before release. I suppose it's all down to money as they want to get some off their costs back. Before Christmas there was no sign of a release date.

Hi Morgan & Brad,
I think all people chasing Welsh ancestors will be disappointed as we are all waiting for it to come on line and thought we would have to wait until 2011. When they announced that it was available I got very excited ( only people chasing family will appreciate that ) and then got disappointed when I looked and found no Welsh counties. Still they say they will be added soon, so we live in hope that it's not too long. Are you doing your family history Morgan
