A new section has gone on-line in the gallery featuring the Saron Graveyard.
The Saron is located in Park Row, and the datestone on the church says it was built in 1858.

Now this is where I get a bit confussed. Some of the head stones got dated prior to 1858, and the one in the gallery got the year 1834. No other date is mentioned so I take it this is the year of death?

To visit the graveyard and cemetery section, which now has 6 locations from around the town, please click here.

The current two-storey chapel building dates from 1858, but the original Saron chapel was much earlier. I'm not sure how much (if any) of the original building remains, but it was where the smaller single-storey extension (the "vestry") is now.

Edited to add:
The Tredegar Local History Society used to meet sometimes in Saron vestry. i remember some very interesting talks by people like Oliver Jones.

Just had a quick search through Oliver Jones' invaluable "Early Days of Sirhowy and Tredegar"; the original Saron was built in 1819.

I remember seeing the gravestone in the early 1960s, and (with a bit of help) translating the inscription:-

"ER COFFADWRIAETH am RHYS LEWIS gynt aelod o gyfrinfa'r Iforiaid Caredig Tredegar yr hwn a fu farw Rhagfyr y 22 1834 yn 24 mlwydd oed"

"IN MEMORY of RHYS LEWIS former member of the friendly society Tredegar Beloved Ivorites who died December the 22 1834 (in) 24 years old"

The Ivorites was one of many friendly societies which existed in the early 19th Century, providing help - typically sickness (and death) benefits - to members at a time when trade unions were actively discouraged (and had been illegal until 1825 when the Combination Laws of 1799 and 1800 were repealed)
