Its not long now until Spring will be upon us. I'll be planting out my early Broad beans in a couple of weeks (weather permitting) and starting my sprouts inside.
I've got all my seeds ready and this year I'm trying Asparagus peas http://www.unwins.co.uk/asparagus-pea-seeds-pid1111.html for the first time. They look pretty if nothing else. I'm also going to give Swede a go as we've been a bit short of homegrown winter veg this year (the early snow ruined my brocolli).
Is anybody else trying anything different this year, or tempted to try growing their own for the first time? Does anybody have any useful hints and tips? |

Going for a tump of potatos, carrots, chilli and the like. Bought a small green house, and getting ready for the spring to spring into action :-)

| Things starting to happen! A few of my broad beans are now peaking through as are half a dozen of my peas. Sprouts are in the greenhouse along with sweet peas. Beetroot planted a couple of weeks back but no sign yet, carrots, parsnips and turnip seeds all went in yesterday. My tomatoes, marigolds and more sweet peas are in the propogator as is my chilli seedling. Nothing to do for a couple of weeks now but wait (with fingers crossed) for seeds to germinate! |

You certainly can't cupcake! It definitely tastes better than Supermarket veg. I think its because they need to use fast growing, high yield types of veg where as, for example, I can grow carrots that may take a bit longer but have a better flavour.
I've not tried Rhubarb yet. My garden is all raised beds as I have a bad back. I have one bed that I planted 6 Asparagus crowns in last spring and I have a bad feeling that the early bad weather before I could fleece the bed may have killled them off. If so, then Rhubarb is going in instead!
I've tried some more fruit in large pots/ tubs this year and have added a dwarf plum tree, dwarf cherry tree, raspberry canes, a Goji berry bush, a redcurrant and a couple of honeyberry plants (no idea what these last 2 taste of but the plants were on special offer!). I already had blackcurrant, whitecurrant, loads of strawberries, bluberry bushes and a lingonberry plant. So hopefully I'll have my own fruit as well as verg this year. |

| Pierre make sure your greenhouse is tethered well or high wind will wreck it. Don't just rely on the tethers that come with it. I know because mine was shredded even though I had pinned it down and used the tethers. |
