Hi, Can anyone help me? My grandma Eleanor Roberts who will be 100 this year used to attend Nantybwch School during the First World War, and i wondered where i would find possible records for the school or maybe even photos of the classes? Also when her dad died in 1923 i wondered how i would find where he was burried? as they lived next to the Coach and Horses on Charles street, in a little cottage (back 62) that was demolished many many years ago, any help finding ANYTHING would be wonderful for her birthday!
Thanks! |

| ok number sixty two is not next to the coach and horses, it was some way up the hill not too far but a good 80 to 100 yards more or less opposit a back lane that open on to charles st but if you walked the lane you came into arnold place turned left went under the railway arch then down the hill to glanhowy school as to old photo's halfpint(forgive me gillian) may have some because she used to live in number sixty two and she lives in north avenue where i am not too sure and she does'nt have a computer or phone.also her maiden name was thomas. |

| Hi! so sorry! I have only just seen this reply for some strange reason! thank you for your information, I really cannot figure it out, on her birth certificate it says Back of 62 Charles Street, I know there were two hovvels/cottages behind 62 and you had to walk through it to get to them in the back garden so to speak, next door were an eldaly pair of spinster sisters (going back to 1915ish) Grandma has always said it was on the patch of grass to the right of the Coach and Horses, on old maps there is a coupble of buildings to the rear of the house that was next to the pub, also she has always called her school Nantybwch School, whuch was a bit of a walk and she went past a sweatshop opn the way, the school when she went to Tredegar in the 70's had burnt down. She says that the cottage was made up mof two rooms, devided by curtains for 4 young girls and her mom and dad, Grandma will be 101 in Novemeber so trying my best to sort it all out for her! |

Nanty school was nr the railway bridge over Merthyr Rd. I have a friend who went there in the early 1940s, but I think it was much bigger since the Guild had largely been completed. If you have specific questions I will gladly ask them. |

I think the school you have mentioned used to be called Dukestown junior mixed. It burnt down in 1960 or 1961. The school is now called Bryn Bach School, perhaps the head teacher might be able to help you trace any photographs. There are a few photos in the gallery, but unfortunately the earliest is from 1935. Good luck with your search. Trish |

I was at Dukestown Junior school 1957-1961.I have memories of being taught by Mr Prosser in the senior year there and a Mr Tippings and Mr Edwards(??) too.Does anyone know what happened to them in later years? I remember the fire too..it was certainly earlier than 1961 perhaps 1958/9.To answer the questions above..in the Gwent Record Office(now in Ebbw Vale)there is a logbook for the school covering a few years in the 1950s and maybe earlier that might be worth looking at. Any one else out there who attended the school 57-61?? Gary |

I attended the school until 1959 and the school burnt down a year later. yes, I remember the teachers you mentioned and have such happy memories. I met Mr Prosser when he had retired and asked him if he missed teaching "definitely not" he said. Do you remember that last lesson on a Friday, that dreadful repetative spelling from the blackboard. That was the only lesson i found I hated!! I was always reading so already knew the words we had to learn, so I found it a bit boring!! Happy days! Trish |

Can anyone remember Mr Prosser (affectionatly known as Barney) calling the class YOU BLOCKHEADS & also regularly threatening to GET THAT CANE OUT OF MY CUPBOARD. This was something he had (only ever) threatened to do 15 years previously when my brother was in his class too. A true gentleman whenever I served him after I left. |

| I was taught by Mrs Martin, Miss Clarke,Mr Healy and Mr Tippins,my headmaster was a lovely gent called Mr Deakens,I thought Miss Clark was very posh because when the new school was being built she brought a camera in every week to chart the new buildings progress. |

I only visited Nantybwch school once when I was working for CRUISE, after I retired from teaching. I was then working for a berevement counselling service.
I met an old friend of Mine - Graham Healey - who tragically died a few years ago.
Graham and I were in college together in the 1950's.
Graham introduced me to the other members of staff and I gathered it was a happy well run school. |
