" 25,000 for the private sector to do the job and no one says a thing about profiteering. If the job went to the public sector the right wingers would be up in arms about the 'extortionate' costs.

how awful to let the war memorial get into such a state, it shows no respect to the men who gave their lives for this country, where is the councils priorities, ? i only visit tredegar now but i always stop to look at the memorial, it makes me sad to see it like that

i,m not sure cupcake, but the amount of money spent on the park recently i would have thought the cost of refurbishing our war memorial would have been incorporated in that cost. as for gaining permission because it a listed monument, nearly all the park and buildings within are listed,so i dont think that would be a problem considering the amount of work carried out in bedwellty house alone. by the way i am not knocking any grants or improvements that come to tredegar we deserve them.

The same here butch, structurally it looks fine to me, maybe they are planning some extra "bits" for it ?

Still good to see some money being spent (our money that is..) on things like this then thrown at bankers and the like.....

steve howells offered to do it for a fraction of that money, and would probably do a good job. all work seems to go to outside contractors at inflated prices. looking at the memorial recently,it only needs a good clean.

The cost of having anything done has skyrocketed in recent years,
Gone are the days when a Job could be carried out locally
Today work has to include having a risk factor assessed
All materials and labour costs are on a upwards trend as no doubt most people who have work done in their homes have found out.
There was a day when a job like this could and indeed would have been carried out by the Tredegar Council in house,
I was surprised when I returned to Tredegar to live that all the people who would do a spot of welding, woodwork or painting had simply gone.
recently I had a Plumber to cap two 15mm pipes, his bill? 40:00 thank you Mr plumber man.
A lot of money for a ten minute job !!!
