Many thanks to Milkman for the picture

Milkman added, "I like this pic of Tredegar level crossing. I think it was taken about 1955 since the loco is GWR. LMS locos were in use in the early 50s but maybe someone will know when they ceased. (This is a GWR pannier tank)"

I can remember a holding pen for cattle, behind the signal box. the cattle were driven up the prom. to the slaughter house in a lane by the Olympia cinema.

Tom Harris coal yard and weigh bridge was a little further away from the signal box, basically by the side of the river. I've shovelled many a ton of coal, with Harry Oliver into Harris's lorries, taking 3 ton a time to be dropped outside the miners houses.

I must have moved when Dai Davies was building his garage there. I can only remember his garage next to Park Place Surgery.

Just a thought; Ty Trist closed in 1959. The spoil (slag) from TT was taken down the line past Park Place and Glyn Tce to the slag heap past Brompton.
There was also a coal yard immediately above the river bridge in Park Place.
For Davies to be building the garage the line and coalyard must have stopped working.
It seems likely that this pic was therefore taken in the last six months of the full working of the Tredegar Newport line.
(There was some goods train movement for about 3-4 years after but the gates were opened by hand and most things were falling into disrepair.)

The building to the right of the signal box (D H Davies' garage?) looks as though it's still being built. Perhaps that could help date the picture.

uncle bob you are correct it is a great picture that brings back many memories, like standing on the bridge as the steam trains went by

Great picture! As a point of interest the nameplate of this signal box is now in a museum at Kidderminster railway station on the Severn valley railway, sorry for being a nerd!
