Blaenau Gwent council to spend £158k on litter picking

BLAENAU Gwent council will be investing almost £160,000 to help rid the borough’s streets of rubbish by improving its street cleaning services.

The council’s executive committee agreed the investment of additional resources at a meeting held on Wednesday, July 26.

The investment includes the introduction of town centre cleaning on a Saturday, increasing capacity in the cleansing team to clean more streets across Blaenau Gwent, focusing on litter picking, sweeping up debris, removing chewing gum and tackling dog fouling.

An additional team of three will also be appointed to improving cleanliness across the residential streets and rear lanes, removing graffiti, power washing highways signs, bus shelters and illuminated bollards.

Cllr Garth Collier, the council’s deputy leader and the executive member for the environment, said: “We have listened to the feedback we have received from the public and a tidy and clean environment is important to the people of Blaenau Gwent.

“We have responded to that feedback by agreeing to invest £158,000 into the street cleansing service this year and will be monitoring and evaluating its impact over the year.”

Keanjo I can remember when I was young my Dad used to send me and my sister up the road after horses had gone with a bucket and shovel .ukk we really hated that

apparently the council will clear up dogs mess but they don't or won't clean up sheep or horse manure, the one lady I spoke to was quite offish with me when I complained about the sheep mess and snapped that they don't have an animal pound, I said I wanted the manure cleaned up and she said she didn't know if they did that, talk about banging your headkeanjo, my rhubarb would be about ten foot tall if I put all the manure on it, saying that the pile of manure would probably be around the same height

Angel, horse manure is good for rhubarb. Years ago people used to stand by with bucket and spade waiting for the drop.

I agree with all you say Pierre the amount of large items that are just dumped is out of hand. Also the mess on the streets are disgusting .After the recycling collections things that are dropped as they are sorting items out are just left on the road.I would also like to point out the animal mess on our streets is not acceptable trouble is no one is held responsible for the horses or sheep wandering the roads.

First thing they should do is look at the following if you ask me:

1. Payments for large item collections - Simply does not work, people just dump stuff (old sofa's, fridge's, etc, etc), and
2. Three weekly bin collections. Recycle rates have gone done, not up after this was changed.

Let us not get excited.
The newspaper article reports that Blaenau Gwent council is to spend £158k on litter picking.
When it comes to improvements, the area of Blaenau Gwent usually means Ebbw Vale and not Tredegar.
