It was a full house at Tredegar’s Conny Club on Wednesday evening as sixteen teams turned up to earn the title Tredegar Quiz Wizards Champions and support the Tredegar Town Mayors Appeal. Some new teams competing for the first time in the competition, which is now in its thirty fifth year, added some extra impetus and a fresh challenge to the competition.
Two teams from the evening have secured their place in this year’s final. Last year’s winners Team Italia topped the score sheet on the night with 102 points , closely followed by five times winners Ebbw Vale based The Weakest Links who finished with 98.
Also in the nineties were regular supporters and hosts for the evening The Conny Club. Bedwellty Park Bowls Club “B” finished with 93 closely followed by Tred Fest and Bedwellty Park Bowls Club “A”. The Rhyd Hall along with Tredegar Twinning Association provided their usual strong challenge along with The Young Ones and former winners The Welsh Wizards. The new entries proved they will be looking to secure a final place in the next few weeks with Pointless, Evens and Odds, The Mis Fits, Plan “H” and Dot and Dab all capable of providing a strong challenge with their trivia knowledge. The sponsors of the competition Tredegar Town Council were amongst the leaders in the early stages and again will return to challenge for that place in the final..
Many thanks to Brenda and her staff at the Conny Club for again supporting the quiz, making everyone welcome and providing the refreshments . The competition continues next Wednesday in the bar at the Rhyd Hall. 8-15pm

This weeks host for the second round of Tredegar Quiz Wizards was The Rhyd Hall and sixteen teams turned up hoping to secure a place in this year’s final. The competition was keen but friendly as the lead changed hands on a regular basis. At the half way stage only six point separated the top ten teams and it was all to play for in the second half. The music round which had eighteen points available saw some excellent answers. The team representing Bedwellty Park Bowls club “A” took the honours in this round with seventeen points, closely followed by The Rhyd Hall and Evens and Odds with fifteen each.
With twenty seven points at stake in the final two rounds it was warming up into a competitive competition. Veteran quiz campaigners The Clarets who have given excellent support to the quiz for many years took their total to ninety eight, which was the top score of the evening , this secured them a place in this years final. They were joined by The Bowls Club side who built on their excellent music round to finish runners up with ninety six points. They just pipped The Conny Club on the final question of the evening by just one point.
Also in the nineties were Tred Fest, The Rhyd Hall, with Tredegar Twinning The Young Ones Pointless and the Welsh Wizards just behind them, There was little to separate the remaining teams, Bowls “B” Plan H, Evens and Odds and Tredegar Town Council who will all be capable of securing that finals place in the coming weeks.
Next week the competition moves to The Moose Lodge on Thursday February 15 with an 8-15 start. Many thanks once again to the boys and ladies at the Rhyd Hall for another excellent welcome and the superb refreshments.

Another packed house at this week’s venue the Moose Lodge saw two further teams qualify for the final of this years Tredegar Quiz Wizards Competition. Topping the score sheet this week were former winners Tred Fest who just edged out The Rhyd Hall in the final round by a two point margin. Again it was a close competition with excellent scores as the teams answered questions on varied popular subjects plus a music and picture round.
Just behind the two winners and waiting to claim their final place in the next round, were The Welsh Wizards, Tredegar Twinning Association , The Conny Club, Bedwellty Park Bowls Club and the Young Ones who all finished with over eighty points.
Of the remaining teams who again had excellent scores Pointless, Evens and Odds and Plan “H” will have their chance in the final qualifying week. The competition moves to Bedwellty Park Bowls Club on Thursday February 22 with an 8-15 start All teams are welcome
Many thanks to everyone at The Moose Lodge for their help in making the evening a success and the provision of the excellent refreshments which were very welcome on a cold evening.

Bedwellty Park Bowls Club proved to be an excellent venue as the hosts saw fifteen teams competing in the bowls pavilion for the final places in this year Tredegar Quiz Wizards Competition . Saving their best till the final round, top of the pops this week were the Young Ones who just edged out Pointless by three points, both go through to the final. Joining them will be the top scorers from the last few weeks, former winners The Welsh Wizards, consistent supporters The Tredegar Twinning Association , Bedwellty Park Bowls Club “B” who have yet to peak, but will again provide strong opposition in the final. Despite competing with a depleted team numbers wise, the all round knowledge of the Conny Club Tredegar came through in the final rounds and they will again provide strong opposition to secure this years title.
Just outside the final positions this week were Tredegar Town Council, Plan “H” and Evens and Odds but they will compete on finals night against each other in the Runners Up final .
The full line up for finals night, to find this year’s champions to be held at The Willows Social Club on Wednesday February 28 with an 8-15 start will be Bowls Club “B” Bowls Club “A” The Conny Club, The Welsh Wizards , Tredegar Twinning Association , Tred Fest, The Young Ones, Pointless, The Rhyd Hall, Team Italia, The Weakest Links, The Clarets. Many thanks to everyone who braved the weather conditions, and got to The Willows Social Club, by foot or car, to contest the final of Tredegar Quiz Wizards Competition. They were rewarded with an excellent welcome and a superb buffet provided by the host for the evening Steve who does a superb job welcoming guests at the Willows and has supported the quiz for many years.
Ten teams were competing for this year’s title and it proved to be an exciting contest as the title holder wasn’t decided until the few final questions. At the half way point just seven points separated the ten sides as they answered questions on popular trivia subjects and a picture identification round. The Clarets were neck and neck with the Welsh Wizards both on 59 points at this stage
The music round tested the teams musical knowledge as they identified groups and artist from all decades of music. Another round of general knowledge saw the Team Italia and the Conny just edge in front of the Clarets as the Welsh Wizards opened up a slight advantage. Fifteen points were available in the final round and the Welsh Wizards took full advantage to claim this year’s title with a final total of 94.Runners –up were the defending champions Team Italia with 90 and third place going to the Conny Club with 89. The Clarets were just edged out of the top three with 86 with a late surge from the Rhyd Hall giving them 87. Also in the 80’s were The Bedwellty Park Bowls Cub side, Tredegar Twinning Association, Pointless The Young Ones and Tred Fest .
The Welsh Wizards squad off Alan Harries, Cheryl Harries, Sarah Andrews, Granville and Gaynor Davidge and Rita and Mike Winstone were delighted with their win, putting their name on the winning trophy for the second time having won it previously in 2010.
Representing the Town Council , Councillor Alyson Tippings presented the winning team with trophies to commemorate their win Very generously the top three sides donated their prize money back to the Tredegar Town Mayors Appeal which added to the money raised during the quiz nights help to raise £685-oo for the Mayors Appeal.
Many thanks to all the contestants for supporting this year’s quiz without your participation the quiz would not be possible, and we would be unable to raise funds for the Mayors Appeal. Also many thanks to the venues who hosted this year’s competition, The Moose Lodge, Bedwellty Park Bowls Club, The Rhyd Hall, The Conny Club and The Willows Social Club. All contestants were extended a warm welcome and the provision of refreshments was very much appreciated at all venues.
