Has anyone any recollection of a dancehall nicknamed the Memo? I have a feeling it was either at the end of Commercial St or in and around Horace Whitehorn’s Blacksmiths / Council Shed for collecting bales of paper and cardboard. Yes folks they were recycling even then! Any thoughts about the Memo.

It could have been up the hill behind the Gem, in and around the old Spiritualist Chapel, was it also latterly called the Bull Ring or is that a separate building altogether?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I can recall a relative saying there used to be a dance hall at the opposite side of Picton Street chapel near Mount street. Not 100 % sure about this but possibly in later years a kind of swiss? wooden type of house may have been built on the ground it stood on. |

I remember it, on the corner of Picton St (or was it Mount St at that time). It was a nicely decorated wooden building but I think it was called, perhaps, the Regency.
It was well before the time I went dancing |

| I believe that the dance hall called the bullring used to be on dukestown road ,later on the building was used by a pvc window company. |

There seemed to be plenty of places for entertainment/socialising years ago. I do think there is a need for somewhere for our teenagers to do the same. Milkman the wooden house that was near Picton Street chapel was a really unusual design so unlike any other home/building in Tredegar. It really stood out amongst the rows of stone terraces around it. Does anyone know if it was the actual dancehall or was it a new building that was erected after the Regency was demolished. |

I was assured at that time that it had been a dance hall.
That would have been about the early 1940s so possibly it was closed because of the war.
To my knowledge it never re-opened after the war.
As you say there is a shortage of places for young people. We had dance halls, youth clubs, The Boys Chub, Snooker halls, the YMCA and the Lesser Hall. None appear to have been replaced.
The closure of chapels and the like have robbed the town of some of these activities

| I can remember walking past that wooden building when I started Earl St school about 1960 there was someone living there then and it always looked lovely.It was right opposite Picton St chapel.my mother always told me she used to go dancing there and I think it was called the Regency. |

| You are all correct the challet type building in Picton st. was a very popular dance hall before and during the 2ndWW. The bullring was the top drill hall, also a very popular dance hall. I am wondering if Titch is thinking of the Demo (democratic) club in Church Street, which of course sounds like the Memo? Just a thought!! |

Hi Folks
I checked with my friend, as I thought it might have been the Demo but he said it wasn’t.
I wondered if the top Drill Hall or the lower one might have been called the ‘Memorial Hall’ or if there was another memorial hall in the town at one time.

I don't remember the Hall it's self, but I do recall my elder brothers referring to it during the WW2. The resident band was known as the Squadron Airs I believe.? I remember the trumpeter ,but cannot recall his name ; he lived in Richmond terrace or there about. When Herbert Johns moved into the Queens Ballroom some of the band moved with him. There again it's bit hazy in my memory. I'll do some more delving.
