Keith Roberts a former worker at the factory of Crompton Electricars Ltd., in Crown Avenue, Dukestown, has written a book on the history of the company, and former employees may be interested in obtaining a copy.

The story is told of how the company started in Leicester in 1890, the different products they made, and their entry into the electric vehicle market in the early 1930s. It covers the period when a new factory was established in Tredegarin 1968, and the years following, until the end of business in 1983.

Anyone who would like a copy can obtain one from the author direct, at
£10.99 plus £2 p & p.

Keith Roberts, 2 The Causeway, Sketty, Swansea. SA2 0SX

A big thanks to Keith for sending in the info and photos

My Dad worked for Cromptonís for years and I went to many kids Christmas parties in the canteen there. Musical chairs, sandwiches, jelly and ice cream, a selection box from Santa and then the big event! Out came the projector for cartoons and Loganís Run!

Oh, how easily kids were entertained then.

If I remember correctly, didnít Cromptonís make the original Popemobile?

Pleased to read the item from TYG her/his dad worked at Crompton Electricars factory in Tredegar. Mention is made of the Popemobile.
No the company didn't make that vehicle, but sometime in 1981/2 (from memory) the Pope did visit Cardiff and held an open air mass in Pontcanna Fields. The company loaned two brand new milk delivery vehicles (ordered by Leicester Co-operative Society, who gave permission)to the Papal authorities, to be used for delivering the chalices (containing the consecrated hosts)amoung the crowds. The vehicles were painted in the papal colours for the day!

looking at tredegar then and seeing how it is today is terrible. How many industries have we lost?, how many are left?. The days are gone when you can look at any employment as 'in for life'.The best you can hope for is a few years until they shut or move to cut costs. Be intresting to see a list of how many factories, utilities and major employers have left the area.
